If the deal goes through, it would create a mammoth entity likely ranked as one of the largest health systems in the country. UNC and Carolinas had a combined $13.3 billion in total revenue in 2016; if that were a for-profit company, it would have ranked No. 208 on the 2017 Fortune 500 list of largest public companies. In today’s political climate, it can be a dangerous thing to try to predict the future. But each NC Health News reporter looked at what trends and stories they’ll likely be following in 2018. Today, we take a look at environmental issues that have affected the health of hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians and trends that could change how health care looks in the state.

In February 2018 all seven members of the Montague board approved a symbolic resolution to not renew its ties with High Point. Eric Obernauer of the New Jersey Herald stated that the Montague-High Point relationship was “frosty” and “icy”. The Montague district chose to switch back to Port Jervis because Port Jervis offered a lower tuition than High Point; High Point charged $16,368 per student to Montague. All six members of the Montague district voted, in October 2019, to switch back to Port Jervis.

Terrell co-founded and is still on the board of a company, spun-off from Cornerstone, that aims to help doctors and hospitals cut costs and improve the quality of care the same way the High Point practice did. Owen and Cook both cite a movement toward “value-based care,” where providers are paid at least in part on the quality of the care they provide as well as its cost. Although large health systems in North Carolina are shifting toward value-based care, “the systems that we have in place now have not done what they need to do to shift that quickly enough,” Cook said. Since 2006, Wilson Medical Center in Wilson has been faced with a minimum of $80 million in renovations, including an overhaul of some 10 operating rooms, all built in 1964. The board had also been weighing the benefits of instead building a new 120-to-130-bed facility, to the tune of about $1 million per bed, to meet current federal guidelines. As part of a recent merger agreement, Cone Health System has pledged to fund a $150-million five-year capital campaign to include a facilities expansion of Alamance Regional Hospital’s emergency department and cancer center.
